DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

Latest figures from the Department of Health say that there are 10,000 patients in hospital who are ready for discharge.

Some of these people may be waiting for care home beds to become available.

The majority will be waiting for home care support.

Let’s assume that 75% of them are doing so, and that they will need an average of 10 hours per week of home care support.

That equates to 75,000 hours of home care per week.

And assuming that staff do an average of 25 hours per week, that means the sector needs another 3,000 staff.

That’s the challenge Mr Government.

Let’s hope the Cost of Care initiative makes a real difference.
